Energy Conservation
Dining Services participates in the following energy-saving efforts:
- Purchase from local vendors to reduce "food miles," the distance a product travels from farm to table.
- Use high-efficiency compact fluorescent light bulbs. Replace incandescent lighting with more energy-efficient LED bulbs.
- Conserve water by
- manage a "trayless dining" facility in the Heilman Dining Center. Trayless dining saves 1,200 gallons of water daily
- using the thaw-down coolers instead of thawing under running water
- cooking vegetables by steaming or sautéing instead of boiling, which saves water and preserves more nutrients in the vegetables.
- Provide preventive maintenance of all vehicles and equipment.
- Only purchase Energy Star equipment when possible.
